When it comes to designing homes with built-in fireplaces, the brick fireplace is one of the classic designs. This item is usually found in colonial or period styled homes and can be made using the traditional red brick and mortar. Brick can also be used to construct an outdoor fireplace with or without the addition of a chimney. When the center section has an enclosed oven, a chimney is included as part of the design to allow for the escape of smoke and heat.

More homeowners are choosing to have outdoor fireplaces constructed on their properties. Some of these are made using chiseled stone rather than layers of bricks. The fireplace stone needs to be cemented in place and is usually placed on a secure surface such as a cement patio. This item has a natural look and can be used for grilling foods or creating a fire in the evenings. When choosing to have items built using fireplace brick, the colors can range in hues from reds, browns and grays.

Indoor fireplaces can also be constructed using a brick veneer. This is a thin layer of masonry placed over a layer of wood or metal. The finished product has the same look as a structure made entirely of solid brick, but costs less. Another non-traditional style places the pit section inside an existing wall made of stone or brick. These are known as fireplace inserts and have frames around the outer surface area made of metal such as bronze, brass or nickel. There are also several styles of free standing units which are not built into the design of the house.

People looking for fireplace ideas will find pictures available in most home improvement magazines. In addition to the material used to construct the outer areas, classic structures also have fireplace mantels. These are protrusions on the top side of the frame, which are often used as shelves. Most classic mantels are made of wood, but structures made of natural stone can often have a cement mantel instead. The materials and design of a fireplace is usually in keeping with the design used to create the rest of the room.
